The reason why the mindset of ‘I have to dance well’ is dangerous

How to dance well

Sometimes, when we start to feel the desire to show off to someone during class or the desire to dance well, our bodies become overly tense. You might experience that this abstract desire starts to interfere with fully feeling the physical sensations, concentrating on dancing, and listening to music.

This is because there is only an abstract goal of “the desire to perform well”. And we overlook the detailed goals to reach the ultimate goal of “performing well”.

For example, if you think of “I have to dance well,” it is too vague, but if you think of it as showing various textures, you can approach it a little more concretely and feasibly. Also, we can create a detailed goal to show ‘various textures’ as a sub-detailed goal. In order to reach the goal of various textures, you can think of adding softness, strength, and sharpness to the movement. As a more detailed goal, you can reach a very specific feasible goal of ‘letting the body relax’ in movements that show softness.

If you gradually achieve these feasible goals, you should not forget that the dance will ultimately become a good dance. Also, when you achieve feasible goals, you can prevent excessive tension from entering your body.
